Computer Basics

The following are things that everyone should know about their computers, but somehow most people don't know. These are basic maintenance tips. I recommend that if you have problems with your computer to seek professional assistance though. It may cost a little now, but it will likely save you a bunch of headaches down the road.

  • Get and use virus software. Most people use software from retailers, such as McAfee or Norton.  You need to use the software though! It needs to automatically update, which you can setup within the program. If there is a major (newsworthy) outbreak  of a virus/worm/trojan, then I will update it manually to further reduce my risk. Personally, I use avast!, which is free for the basics, but you can upgrade for a price.
  • Use a firewall.  Again, there is commercially available software and free programs available (check download.com and search for firewall). This will keep hackers out of your computer, and your information safe.
  • Do some basic maintenance.
    • Empty your recycle bin. If you right click on the 'recycle bin' icon on your desktop, you will have an option to empty. This will increase your free disk space. I'd do this weekly.
    • Run disk cleanup. From your start menu, click on Programs, go to Accessories, then System Tools,  and finally to Disk Cleanup. Run the cleanup for your hard drive C:. I'd do this monthly.
    • Run disk defragmenter. From your start menu, click on Programs, go to Accessories, then System Tools,  and finally to Defragmenter. Run the cleanup for your hard drive C:. I'd do this monthly.
  • Use a spyware detection program.  There are lots of free programs available (check download.com and search for spyware). This is just in case something gets past your other security programs.

I hope these simple hints keep your computer safe and running smoothly.
